Kubernetes Revolution: Future of App Development Goes Cloud-Native

June 10, 2024

The digital ecosystem is undergoing a radical transformation as cloud-native technologies, such as Kubernetes, take center stage in the realm of application development. A recent survey conducted by Pure Storage and Dimensional Research reveals a significant trend within the IT sector—a decisive shift toward cloud-native Kubernetes platforms. This survey, which gathered insights from 530 platform leaders proficient in Kubernetes-based services, brings to light a future where 80% of new applications are expected to be born in the cloud within the next five years. Notably, hybrid cloud deployments are garnering marked preference, showcasing the industry’s recognition of the adaptive benefits cloud-native technology harbors.

The allure of Kubernetes is further punctuated by the finding that 58% of organizations are planning migrations away from traditional VM infrastructure. The survey predicts more organized and timely migrations, likely to unfold over a two-year horizon. Kubernetes is favored for its adept handling of data-intensive workloads such as databases, analytics, and AI/ML applications, thanks to its scalable, flexible nature, which allows for operational simplicity and potential cost reductions.

Embracing Kubernetes for Enhanced Agility

The pivot toward Kubernetes is evident in the establishment of platform engineering teams by 96% of the surveyed organizations. These specialized teams are keystones in the infrastructure, enabling scalable and flexible application development pathways. The investment is not solely in human capital; it includes an uptick in training, consultation services, and recruitment efforts aimed at attracting skilled engineers. This structured support is crucial as the industry navigates the complexities associated with transitioning from VM-based applications to Kubernetes.

Challenges and Opportunities in the Kubernetes Ecosystem

The tech domain is witnessing a profound evolution, led by cloud-native technologies like Kubernetes, redefining app development. Based on the Pure Storage and Dimensional Research survey, a clear tilt toward Kubernetes cloud platforms is emerging in IT. Collated from 530 Kubernetes-savvy platform chiefs, the data projects that in five years, 80% of fresh apps will originate in the cloud. Hybrid cloud setups, in particular, are drawing attention due to their flexible, cloud-native advantages.

Kubernetes is enhancing its appeal, as evidenced by 58% of organizations now eyeing a move away from legacy VM setups. The survey anticipates these migrations to proceed with organization and swiftness, across an approximate two-year period. Kubernetes stands out for its proficiency in managing heavy-duty workloads like databases and AI/ML tasks, owing to its scalability and elasticity, which propel operational ease and promise lower costs.
