Google Cloud Unveils Managed Global WAN Service for Enterprises

Google Cloud has introduced Cloud WAN, a fully managed enterprise backbone optimized for wide area network (WAN) architectures. By leveraging Google’s extensive global network, the new service is designed to enhance site, application, and user connectivity with optimal performance and reduced costs. Google’s infrastructure comprises over 2 million miles of fiber, 33 subsea cables, and 202 points of presence. The promise of a 99.99% reliability service-level agreement and up to 40% faster performance compared to public internet connections is a game-changing announcement for enterprises. Cloud WAN also offers up to 40% lower total cost of ownership compared to traditional multiprotocol label switching services, which positions it as a robust and cost-effective alternative for global businesses.

Google’s senior executive, Amin Vahdat, general manager of machine learning systems and Cloud AI, highlighted that enterprises can now access the same planet-scale network that powers Google’s own services, including Gmail, YouTube, and Search. This announcement addresses the complexities businesses face in managing security stacks and network configurations needed to connect widespread operations. The introduction of Cloud WAN signifies a major advancement in simplifying and securing enterprise networks on a global scale. Vahdat underscored that this solution is built to cater to the growing demands in the modern business environment, where connectivity, security, and performance are paramount.

High-Performance Connectivity

Cloud WAN is designed to address two primary use cases. The first use case involves high-performance, cross-region connectivity tailored for global organizations with dispersed data centers. This feature facilitates reliable and cost-effective data transfers across regions, enhancing operational efficiency. It offers multiple connectivity options, including Cloud Interconnect for direct links from on-premises data centers to Google Cloud. For connections with other cloud providers like AWS, Microsoft Azure, and Oracle Cloud, enterprises can utilize Cross-Cloud Interconnect. Moreover, the Cross-Site Interconnect feature, currently in preview, promises dedicated point-to-point layer 2 private connections at high speeds, providing enterprises with a secure and efficient way to manage their interconnected data centers.

These connectivity options ensure that enterprises can integrate their diverse data centers seamlessly, irrespective of their geographical dispersion. With the inclusion of built-in security measures and high-speed connections, Cloud WAN positions itself as a crucial tool for businesses aiming to optimize their network performance and reduce latency. The enhanced connectivity not only improves data transfer rates but also ensures greater reliability, making it easier for businesses to maintain resilience against network disruptions. This holistic approach to connectivity emphasizes Google Cloud’s commitment to supporting enterprises in achieving robust and scalable global network solutions.

Branch and Campus Networks

In addition to high-performance cross-region connectivity, Cloud WAN addresses the connectivity demands of branch and campus networks. Google’s Premium Tier network empowers enterprises by connecting their branch offices to the cloud, SaaS applications, and the internet with built-in security and low latency. The Network Connectivity Center serves as a centralized hub that is compatible with VPN and SD-WAN technologies from various vendors, spanning over 20 countries. This hub offers enterprises a unified platform for managing their network infrastructure, simplifying the deployment and maintenance of branch and campus networks.

The connectivity options available through Cloud WAN proffer optimal performance, fortified security, and minimized latency. By integrating advanced technologies from leading vendors, businesses can ensure seamless operations across their branch offices and campuses. This feature is particularly crucial for industries where constant, secure connectivity is imperative for business continuity. Furthermore, the integrated security features act as safeguards, protecting valuable data against potential threats while simultaneously enhancing operational efficiency.

Flexible Pricing Models and Third-Party Integration

To cater to diverse business needs, Google offers both usage-based and fixed-price models for Cloud WAN. The fixed-price model for Cloud Interconnect is set for general availability soon. This pricing flexibility allows enterprises to choose a model that aligns with their budget and operational requirements. One of the standout aspects of Cloud WAN is its extensive integration with third-party offerings, including leading SD-WAN vendors and security service edge providers. This compatibility facilitates a seamless integration process for businesses, enabling them to tailor their security configurations to meet specific needs and maintain robust protection systems.

Moreover, Cloud WAN supports cloud-based next-generation firewalls from partners, bringing another layer of security customization to enterprises. These integrations ensure that companies can leverage the latest technologies and innovations from various vendors to create a secure network environment. By offering versatile pricing models and fostering collaborations with renowned vendors, Google Cloud emphasizes adaptability and comprehensive security solutions for businesses employing Cloud WAN.
