In a bid to help enterprises streamline their cloud infrastructure costs, Amazon Web Services (AWS) has introduced a powerful new tool, the Graviton Savings Dashboard. This tool is designed to facilitate seamless migrations to Graviton-based instances, ultimately aiming to achieve enhanced cost efficiency. The Graviton CPU, first launched in 2018, is celebrated for its energy efficiency and robust performance, especially tailored for cloud workloads. Over the years, AWS has continued to evolve this technology, culminating in the recent release of the Graviton 4 processor generation, which hit the market earlier this year. As businesses increasingly shift to cloud-based solutions, the significance of tools that help in optimizing these transitions cannot be overstated.

Centralized Visibility and Migration Planning

The Graviton Savings Dashboard is strategically crafted to assist various enterprise users, including FinOps practitioners, product managers, and software engineers. It offers detailed insights into performance impacts and cumulative savings, which are crucial for planning workload migrations. One of the key highlights of the dashboard is its centralized visibility across an enterprise’s accounts. This feature allows users to monitor Graviton adoption across multiple management accounts, member accounts, and different AWS regions. Additionally, the dashboard features dedicated tabs that enable users to review both current Graviton usage and potential savings in the domains of compute and managed services. These tabs are designed to offer granular insights, making it easier for enterprise users to identify areas where they can achieve cost savings. By delineating between “Typically Easy” and “Requires Additional Planning” categories for EC2 instance migrations, the dashboard provides a prioritized approach to workload transitions. Integrated AWS Services and Data Insights

Functionality-wise, the Graviton Savings Dashboard integrates seamlessly with several existing AWS services, making it a comprehensive tool for cost optimization. It leverages Amazon S3, Athena, and QuickSight to provide a robust framework for data analysis and presentation. The dashboard utilizes AWS Cost and Usage Reports (CUR), the AWS SDK, and the AWS Public pricing API to collect extensive data on usage, cost, and resource inventory. This collected data is then stored in Amazon S3, where Athena performs thorough analyses to generate actionable insights, subsequently presented through Amazon QuickSight’s intuitive visualizations.

Deployment of the Graviton Savings Dashboard is streamlined through AWS CloudFormation Templates and the command line tool, “cid-cmd.” However, users must set up crucial prerequisites such as the AWS CUR service, the Inventory Collector Module from the Optimization Data Collection lab, and QuickSight. Once these basics are established, the dashboard can be deployed with relative ease. The typical monthly cost for utilizing this comprehensive tool ranges between $50 and $100, offering a cost-effective solution for significant infrastructure savings.

Supporting IT Expenditure Optimization

Beyond the Graviton Savings Dashboard, AWS continues to unveil innovative tools and updates aimed at refining IT expenditure optimization. At the recently held annual re:Invent conference, AWS made several noteworthy announcements. Among these was the introduction of the future Tranium3 chips and new EC2 P6 instances featuring Nvidia’s new Blackwell chips, both emblematic of AWS’s commitment to energy-efficient advances.
