Alibaba Cloud Expands in Latin America and APAC with New Regions
Alibaba Cloud, also known as Aliyun, is escalating its commitment to global expansion by announcing its first cloud region in Mexico. This significant move marks the Chinese cloud behemoth’s latest foray into Latin America, where there is a burgeoning demand for technological solutions across a multitude of industries. It’s not just an expansion of cloud capabilities that Alibaba is bringing to the table, but also a dedication to fostering artificial intelligence infrastructure and nurturing digital talent. Selina Yuan, Alibaba Cloud Intelligence’s president of international business, confirmed these goals at the Alibaba Cloud Global Summit in Paris, articulating a vision where the company’s growth goes hand in hand with local academic and business partnerships.

Setting Foot in Latin America

Alibaba Cloud’s entry into Mexico signifies a bold step in a region where cloud services are rapidly becoming a quintessential aspect of business infrastructure. Competitors are already well on their way to establishing a foothold, with entities like Microsoft, Oracle, Huawei, and AWS managing or planning significant investments in the local cloud realms. Mexico’s landscape already includes Microsoft’s extensive cloud regions and Google’s anticipated region in Querétaro, signaling an increasingly competitive environment. Alibaba Cloud aims to penetrate the market by leveraging its substantial global presence, which currently stretches across 16 cloud regions and 33 availability zones outside mainland China—complemented by its robust domestic network of 14 cloud regions and 56 availability zones. Their history reflects a strategic pattern of expansion, with regional developments that include an array of data centers in major APAC cities from 2017 to 2021.

APAC Market: An Arena of Growth

Alibaba Cloud, known also as Aliyun, is intensifying its efforts in global expansion with the debut of its inaugural cloud region in Mexico. This pivotal development signifies the Chinese cloud titan’s latest venture into the growing Latin American market, where various sectors are increasingly seeking advanced technological solutions. However, Alibaba’s presence extends beyond mere cloud services expansion, emphasizing the cultivation of artificial intelligence ecosystems and the elevation of digital expertise. At the prestigious Alibaba Cloud Global Summit in Paris, Selina Yuan, the International Business President of Alibaba Cloud Intelligence, underscored these ambitions. She highlighted that Alibaba’s aim is not just to build a larger footprint but also to work closely with local educational and professional entities. Alibaba’s strategy is clear: burgeoning market engagement intertwined with the company’s growth and regional collaborations in technology and innovation.
