Equinix, Inc. has made a substantial investment of RM23 million to acquire land from Cyberview Sdn Bhd in Cyberjaya, Malaysia, as part of its strategy to expand its data center capacity. This recent acquisition aims to address the increasing demand for reliable, high-performance data center services in both Malaysia and the broader Southeast Asian region. The move follows the successful launches of Equinix’s International Business Exchange TM (IBX®) centers in Kuala Lumpur (KL1) and Johor (J#). With Malaysia’s supportive government policies, strategic location, and escalating digital infrastructure needs, the data center market in the country is poised for significant growth, anticipated to reach an estimated US$3.97 billion by 2029.

Strategic Land Acquisition in Cyberjaya

Proximity to Existing KL1 Facility

The newly acquired 14,300 square meters of land in Cyberjaya is strategically located just under a kilometer from Equinix’s existing KL1 facility. This close proximity offers a considerable advantage, allowing Equinix to enhance its ecosystem in Malaysia effectively. By clustering their facilities, Equinix can offer improved network connectivity and services to a wide array of network and cloud service providers, as well as enterprises spanning various industries. This strategic location is aimed at bolstering Malaysia’s position as a digital hub in the region.This investment is also a testament to the growing importance of data centers in the digital economy of Malaysia. Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari, Chief Minister of Selangor, emphasized the critical role that data centers play in driving the digitalization of the region’s economy. Equinix currently operates two data centers in Malaysia, KL1 and J#, providing a combined colocation space of 4,590 square meters. These state-of-the-art facilities have attracted a broad spectrum of companies from diverse sectors such as network, content, fintech, gaming, and artificial intelligence (AI). These companies have deployed their IT infrastructure within Equinix’s data centers to leverage the robust network solutions and connectivity options offered by the company. This strategic setup supports businesses in achieving lower latency, greater reliability, and improved performance of their digital services.Equinix’s strong presence in the Asia-Pacific region, with 56 data centers across key metropolitan areas, further supports its commitment to driving digital transformation in Malaysia. Plans for Further Expansion

New Data Center in Johor

Further solidifying its commitment to Malaysia, Equinix has announced plans to construct a new data center in Johor. The initial investment for this project is approximately $40 million (RM180 million). The planned facility will support the growing demand for data center services and digital infrastructure in the region. This new data center is expected to play a pivotal role in the development and deployment of advanced technologies, including 5G, across Malaysia. Equinix aims to have the Johor data center operational by the first quarter of 2024, thereby reinforcing its capacity to serve the evolving needs of businesses.This development aligns with Equinix’s broader strategy to support Malaysia’s digital transformation and 5G deployment.
